India Kawasaki Motors launches Z1000 streetfighter, Ninja 1000 sport-tourer at Rs 12,50,000 ex-showroom

Following quickly after the September launch of the ZX10R and ZX14R, India Kawasaki Motors launched their anticipated Z1000 street-fighter motorcycle in India at an event held in Pune today. In a surprise announcement, Kawasaki also announced the availability of the faired variant of the Z1000, called the Ninja 1000. Both share the same 1043cc mill in the same state of tune, putting out 142PS at 10,000 rpm and 111Nm of torque at 7,300 rpm. The new motorcycles will be sold alongside Kawasaki’s four other models from the Wakdewadi, Pune showroom, as well as a new showroom to come up in the Delhi NCR region shortly.

The big Z continues Kawasaki’s tradition of edgy, sometimes polarising look of their nakeds with what they call ‘sugomi’ styling. We see whiffs of the 1290 Super Duke in the menacingly low headlight cluster, meant to evoke a crouching predator. The Ninja 1000 (sold as the Z1000SX sport-tourer in Europe) looks decidedly less radical, perhaps owing to it’s more mature positioning. There was a time when the naked and “sport-touring” category of motorcycle used a previous-generation superbike motor in a lower state of tune. With 142PS on tap, clearly there haven’t been many compromises with the Z1000 motor.

In line with its positioning as a sport tourer, the Ninja 1000 gets more rear wheel travel and a longer wheelbase, in addition to Kawasaki’s KTRC traction control system. Both bikes are generously equipped with monobloc brake calipers, Showa’s separate-function forks up front and step-less rebound damping and remote preload adjustment out back.

India Kawasaki Motors expects to sell 100 bikes per model per year going forward, with current focus on Maharashtra and the NCR. Both the Z1000 and the Ninja 1000 will be available for ₹12,50,000 ex-showroom Pune and Delhi. However, the sole current Kawasaki dealer will NOT handle registration formalities in cities other than Pune. So if you live even a short hop away in Mumbai, buying any of the recent big Kawis is going to require managing registration formalities yourself. This is quite likely more trouble than it’s worth. We understand that recent buyers of the ZX10R and ZX14R from Mumbai have been compelled to register their bikes at their Pune properties, or those of relatives.

As it stands, the Kawasaki Z1000 and Ninja 1000 will cost:

Ex-showroom: ₹12,50,000
Zero-dep insurance: ₹34,036
Temporary registration: ₹2000
RTO registration: varies by region
