Vast legroom, brand-new engine, loaded with features

The E 220 d LWB (long wheelbase) is the third new E Class model German carmaker Mercedes has launched in as many months. The new 2.0-litre model follows the E 200 petrol and E 350 d diesel to market. At ₹57.14 lac ex-showroom, Pune, the expansive legroom alone is worth a second, and third look for those in the market for a mid-size luxury sedan.

Also new for this variant of the new E Class is the all-aluminium OM654 motor, which like the car, is also assembled in India. The new motor is a featherweight 168kg, and outputs 192hp and 400Nm of torque from under two litres of displacement. It also uses 13% less fuel, and comes mated to a 9G-TRONIC transmission for the 220 d. A solid feature list follow the competent drivetrain.

Exterior

Mercedes is offering full LED lighting, a panoramic sunroof and 17" alloys on the E 220 d. Tail lamps are adaptive, and adjust brightness based on ambient light for improved safety. Of course, there’s no mistaking the stretched profile of the car. While it’s still 200mm short of an S Class, the generous legroom is very close to that car.

Interior

They’ve thrown the catalogue at the E 220 d for inside accoutrements. You get 64-colour ambient lighting, a 12.3" information screen for the COMAND system, touch pads on the steering wheel for system navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and a chauffeur package with set memory. Rear seats also recline by upto 37 degrees – a first for the segment.

Safety

The 22 comes with seven airbags, and also boats completely autonomous parallel parking, thanks to lowered restrictions against use of radar technology in cars. ESP and PRE-SAFE seat belts are also standard.

Significantly, the E 220 d is available with a service package for ₹76,600, covering service for two years. If you so choose, you can buy service packages in advance for upto 10 years, so you don’t have to worry as much about your luxury car service costs.

The E 220 d offers a unique package; other luxury sedans in the segment can’t match the legroom, and the choice of a well-specified package should work well in the market.
