Yamaha India lauches FZ25 at ₹1,19,500

It’s been over seven years coming, and is the cheapest 250cc in India

The FZ16 changed the 150cc premium market when it launched over seven years ago, and even then we knew that the platform was overbuilt for the modest engine output. Back then it had sharp handling, looked like nothing else and had the largest tyres we’d seen on an Indian bike. Yamaha has given the capable platform a more potent engine today, with the launch of the FZ25. The big story is the price, which is very competitive at ₹1,19,500 ex-showroom. The FZ25 goes up against capable competition, but with the numbers on it’s side. This is the cheapest 250cc motorcycle available in India.

You do get what you paid for in terms of the engine, though. The motor generates a modest 20.9PS and 20Nm and is a two-valve, oil-cooled motor. There’s no ABS on offer; that will come next year when regulations require it. Yamaha is focusing more on everyday rideability and light weight. With a 148kg kerb weight, we expect gentlemanly performance. The 43kmpl efficiency figure should also appeal to commuters. However, the FZ25 gets an all-LED complement of lights, with the second LED headlight in the market (following the Bajaj Dominar). There’s also an all-digital LCD console for your instrumentation. There’s plenty of value on offer for the aggressive price.

The rear tyre of the new FZ25 appears to be of a higher profile than the FZ16, suggesting there have been changes to the geometry. We spot double-downtubes up front, so this is definitely a new chassis. The relatively oversquare engine (same stroke as the FZ16, larger bore) suggests a motor that will need to be revved

Our editor-at-large Praveen Kurup has ridden his FZ16 1,50,000km in all sorts of adverse conditions. We’ll soon see how the FZ25 stacks up for him. Stay tuned for the press ride in the next few weeks.
