Yamaha’s R25: too late to the party?
We’ve been meaning to do a post about Yamaha’s recently-showcased R25 quarter-litre sport bike concept, but it looks like Truncatech beat us to it. The whole list of reasons why the R25 isn’t worth the wait is worth a read, but we believe it’s principally down to timing.

Kawasaki has been the first mover in the 250 segment and would own the Indian market if it wasn’t for the high price the baby Ninja commands. Then, along came Honda and the success of the CBR250R is evident. Along comes KTM and blows away everything else in performance per rupee. In this scenario, a 250cc Yamaha really has it’s work cut out for it. Truncatech argues against the cheaper components and lack of equipment on the upcoming model, but we’d caution here that what we’ve seen is just a concept. The production vehicle could be substantially different. That being said, coming this late to the party, Yamaha needs to have some tricks to impress an audience that has other options.
A few years ago, a steel trellis frame ala CBR250R was a bit of a novelty, as was 25hp. We live in a world where 250s are being replaced by 300s and you can buy a bike with radial calipers and ABS for ₹2,00,000. Yamaha needs to bring its A game, and we fervently hope that they do.
